Ranchi, Jharkhand: In a significant blow to Left-Wing Extremism in Jharkhand, two Maoists, including Pappu Lohra, the notorious leader of the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), were killed in an encounter with security forces on Sunday.
The operation, conducted jointly by the Jharkhand Police and CRPF, took place in a forested region near Latehar district, an area long considered a Maoist stronghold. Acting on specific intelligence, the forces launched a coordinated search in the early hours, which led to a fierce exchange of fire.
“Two hardcore Maoists were neutralized during the operation. One of them has been identified as Pappu Lohra, a top JJMP commander wanted in several cases,” confirmed a senior police official.
Who Was Pappu Lohra?
Pappu Lohra was a key figure in the JJMP, an outlawed Maoist splinter group active in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Bihar. He was involved in numerous extortion rackets, attacks on security forces, and was carrying a substantial bounty on his head.
Officials say his death is a major tactical success in the ongoing campaign to restore peace and eliminate militant threats from the region.
Arms and Ammunition Seized
After the encounter, security forces recovered automatic weapons, explosives, Maoist literature, and other tactical gear from the site. Search operations are still underway to track down other members who may have escaped during the gunfire.
Government Reaction
Jharkhand Chief Minister and Union Home Ministry officials were briefed on the development. Authorities have praised the forces for their precision and bravery in neutralizing high-risk targets.
