Ranchi witnessed heightened tension on Friday as students and job aspirants marched in protest against alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted in Jharkhand. During the demonstration, ink was thrown at All India Students’ Association (AISA) national president Neha Bora.
Bora had joined the students who were marching towards the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly to press for action over alleged irregularities in examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). The incident created a brief disturbance among the protesters, while the identity and motive of the person responsible remained under investigation.
The student movement has been continuing for several days, with protesters demanding greater transparency and accountability in government recruitment examinations. Students have raised concerns regarding the conduct of competitive examinations, alleged procedural irregularities and the involvement of private agencies in the examination process.
Among their demands are the cancellation and re-conduct of the 14th JPSC Preliminary Examination, timely completion of pending JSSC examinations, publication of examination results and a more transparent recruitment system. Protesters have also called for a fixed annual recruitment calendar to provide greater certainty to job aspirants.
The agitation has included a hunger strike, with several students continuing their protest while appealing to the state government to intervene. Student groups had also announced plans to intensify their campaign by marching towards and gheraoing the Assembly.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren has indicated that the government is willing to engage with students and discuss their concerns. An 11-member student delegation has also been formed to facilitate talks with the government, raising hopes of a possible dialogue.
The confrontation involving Neha Bora has added another dimension to the ongoing agitation. Student leaders have appealed for the movement to remain peaceful while continuing to demand answers from the authorities.
The government’s response and the outcome of discussions with student representatives are expected to play an important role in determining the next course of the protest.
