Cyclone Ditwah to Make Landfall in Tamil Nadu–Puducherry Today: 54 Flights Cancelled, Schools Shut; 150 Dead in Sri Lanka, 300 Indians Stranded

Severe Cyclonic Storm Ditwah is expected to hit the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coastline today, bringing heavy rainfall, powerful winds, and the risk of flooding in several districts. Authorities have issued high alerts across coastal regions as the storm intensifies while approaching land.

Flights Cancelled, Schools Closed

In preparation for the cyclone’s impact, 54 flights have been cancelled at major airports in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai. Passengers have been advised to check revised schedules before travelling.
Schools and colleges in multiple districts—including Chennai, Cuddalore, and Puducherry—remain closed as a precautionary measure.

Sri Lanka Hit Hard: 150 Dead

Before moving towards India, Cyclone Ditwah caused widespread devastation in Sri Lanka, where heavy rain and landslides led to over 150 deaths. Large parts of the island nation remain without electricity, and rescue teams continue to search for missing people.

300 Indians Reported Stranded in Sri Lanka

India’s Ministry of External Affairs is monitoring the situation after reports that around 300 Indian nationals are stranded due to washed-out roads, airport disruptions, and communication breakdowns. Efforts are underway to assist and evacuate them once conditions stabilize.

States on Alert

Disaster response teams, coastal police, and NDRF units have been deployed along vulnerable regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea, and several coastal villages have been moved to relief shelters.

Officials warn that the next 24 hours will be critical, with strong winds, heavy downpours, and the possibility of storm surges.
