Tesla has officially entered the Indian automobile market with the launch of its first electric car in the country – the Model Y. The premium electric SUV is now available in two variants, offering impressive performance and long-range capabilities. This much-anticipated move is being seen as a major step forward for India’s electric mobility sector.

The Model Y is available in two versions. The Long Range variant can deliver up to 622 kilometers on a single charge, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 217 km/h. The Performance variant, on the other hand, offers a range of up to 500 kilometers, but with quicker acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds and a higher top speed of 250 km/h. Both models come with dual-motor all-wheel-drive systems, making them suitable for both city and highway driving conditions.

Tesla has priced the Model Y starting at ₹60 lakh (ex-showroom). The final cost will vary depending on the variant selected and additional features, such as the Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability, which is offered as an optional upgrade. Customers will be able to configure and book their vehicles through Tesla’s India-specific portal, expected to go live soon.

In terms of infrastructure, Tesla has confirmed the rollout of its fast-charging Supercharger network in India. The first phase includes Supercharger installations in major metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Tesla will also provide home wall-chargers to support convenient residential charging.

The company has opened its first experience showrooms (galleries) in Mumbai (BKC – Bandra Kurla Complex) and New Delhi (Select CityWalk Mall, Saket). These showrooms allow prospective buyers to explore Tesla’s lineup, learn about features, and get assistance with pre-bookings. Tesla has plans to expand into other cities like Bengaluru and Chennai by early 2026.

Initially, Tesla will import the Model Y as a completely built unit (CBU), but discussions are ongoing with the Indian government regarding local assembly or production in the future. This could lead to more affordable pricing and greater availability of future models like the Model 3, Cybertruck, and the upcoming compact Tesla hatchback tailored for emerging markets.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has expressed optimism about India’s EV future, stating that the country is ready for next-generation clean mobility solutions. The arrival of Tesla is expected to disrupt the premium EV segment and accelerate India’s shift toward sustainable transportation.

Singh News Media will continue to provide updates on Tesla’s progress in India, including delivery timelines, upcoming models, and charging infrastructure developments.
