Supreme Court Directs Schools to Provide Free Sanitary Pads to Girls; Separate Toilets for Boys and Girls Made Mandatory

The Supreme Court of India has issued a significant directive aimed at improving hygiene, dignity, and safety in schools across the country. The court has ordered that free sanitary pads must be provided to girl students in all schools, stressing that menstrual health is a basic right and not a privilege.

Separate Toilets Mandatory

Along with access to sanitary products, the court has made it compulsory for schools to have separate and functional toilets for boys and girls. The bench observed that the absence of proper sanitation facilities often leads to discomfort, absenteeism, and dropouts among girl students.

Strict Warning to Schools

The Supreme Court has warned that schools failing to comply with these directions may face cancellation of their recognition or affiliation. Authorities have been instructed to conduct regular inspections to ensure full implementation of the order.

Focus on Dignity and Education

The court emphasized that providing basic menstrual hygiene support is essential to ensure that girls can attend school with confidence and dignity. It also highlighted the need to break social stigma around menstruation through awareness and proper facilities.

Implementation to Be Monitored

State governments and education departments have been directed to submit compliance reports within a stipulated time. The court said that children’s health, safety, and equal access to education cannot be compromised under any circumstances.
