New Delhi: Former South African cricketer and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) legend AB de Villiers has come out strongly against what he called “overly negative” commentary during the high-voltage IPL 2025 match between RCB and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
Reacting to repeated criticism of RCB’s batting performance on air, de Villiers took to his social media handle to express disappointment with some commentators, whom he accused of “setting unrealistic standards” and ignoring the conditions of the pitch.
“Not every day is a flat deck. You can’t expect Rishabh Pant or anyone else to score 118 on a pitch offering movement. Let’s be fair to the players. Context matters,” wrote de Villiers, responding to commentary that seemingly downplayed RCB’s chase.
Context Behind the Comment
RCB struggled while chasing a modest target set by LSG on a pitch that offered variable bounce and assistance to the bowlers. With key batters failing to convert starts into big scores, some commentators compared the match to high-scoring outings by players like Rishabh Pant, implying RCB lacked intent.
De Villiers, known for his balanced perspective and in-depth cricketing knowledge, argued that conditions must be factored in before such comparisons are made.
Fan Reactions Pour In
RCB fans quickly rallied behind their former star, praising him for defending the team and calling out biased commentary. Many echoed his sentiment, asking broadcasters to provide insightful analysis instead of headline-chasing remarks.
“AB always speaks from the heart. He knows what it takes on tough days,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
