Udhampur, Jammu & Kashmir — An intense encounter broke out early Thursday morning between security forces and heavily armed terrorists in the Basantgarh region of Udhampur district. The operation, officially named Operation Bihali, was launched following credible intelligence inputs on the presence of foreign militants hiding in the dense forested hills.
Officials confirmed that a joint team of the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police cordoned off the area around 8:30 AM and came under fire shortly after. The gunfight is ongoing as reinforcements continue to arrive at the site.
Multiple Militants Believed Trapped
Initial inputs suggest that three to four terrorists, suspected to be linked with Pakistan-based outfits, are trapped in the area. The militants are believed to have crossed over recently and were under surveillance for several days before the operation was greenlit.
Terrain and Weather Pose Challenges
The encounter zone is located in a steep, heavily forested area, which has made the operation more challenging. Despite foggy conditions and patchy rain, security forces have managed to maintain a tight cordon.
“The operation is being executed with extreme caution to prevent any collateral damage,” said a senior officer on ground.
High Alert in Region
With the Amarnath Yatra around the corner, security agencies had already stepped up vigilance in Jammu and Kashmir. Today’s encounter has further raised alert levels in surrounding districts. Pilgrimage routes are being monitored closely, and additional security has been deployed to ensure safety.
