Ajinkya Rahane Eyes Test Comeback After Stellar Ranji Trophy Performances

Mumbai, February 12, 2025 – Veteran Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has reignited hopes of a Test return, following an impressive run in the Ranji Trophy. Despite being dropped from the national squad after the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final, Rahane believes he still has a lot to offer in red-ball cricket.

Rahane’s Recent Form:

🔹 Ranji Trophy 2024-25: 437 runs at an average of 39.72
🔹 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: 469 runs at 58.62, strike rate 165
🔹 Last 10 Matches: Three 90+ scores, one 80+ knock, and a century

Speaking after Mumbai’s victory over Haryana in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal, Rahane said:
“I am batting well now. The Mushtaq Ali Trophy went great, and I have been scoring runs consistently. I am happy with my batting.”

On His WTC Final Performance & Test Snub

Rahane made a surprise return to the Indian squad for the 2023 WTC final against Australia, where he top-scored with 89 & 46 in difficult conditions. Despite this, he was dropped after a few low scores in the West Indies tour.

“I batted well in the WTC final, but I got dropped. Selection is not in my hands, but I still have the hunger for Test cricket. I respect the format, and I am playing with all my heart. Abhi bhi cricket bacha hai mere mein.

Focus on Ranji Trophy Semifinal, Not India Call-Up Yet

With India’s next Test series—a five-match tour of England—set for June 2025, Rahane was asked if he’s eyeing a return. However, the Mumbai captain remained focused on the present:

“That’s in June. Right now, our focus is on the Ranji Trophy semifinal. We’ll take a couple of days off and prepare for the next match.”

With consistent domestic performances and a proven Test pedigree, could Rahane force his way back into India’s red-ball squad for England? Only time will tell.
